I had always sent my kids to camp. First it was day care with kiddie pools, the I sent them to daylong recess with fun teenagers supervising instead of teachers and then, finally, I sent them off to sleep away camp. What are other fun summertime options for kids and teenagers? I decided to ask The Summer Lady aka Ann Travis.

MIAB(Mirth in a Box):Please do tell! What are other options for summer time fun besides traditional sleep away camp?
TSL (The Summer Lady):There are travel and outdoor adventure programs, community service programs, language immersion programs, specialty sports camps, theatre/music/art camps, film and photography programs, culinary, fun academic programs, remedial programs, animals and marine biology programs, weight loss programs, internships and many more options.
MIAB: You’ve been advising parents on summer fun for over 2 decades. Where have you seen the most growth?
TSL: The selection of options has grown tremendously. There is a program for every interest and need.
MIAB:How have sleep away camps changed in the past 20 years?
TSL:The camps are dealing with many more camper issues today and have had to adjust their staffing and programming to meet the spectrum of needs. The campers are also more sophisticated and demanding and the programming has to stay current with new trends and options that children are looking for today. Parents are also looking for more in activity offerings, facilities, staffing and safety and health issues. It has become more difficult for directors to meet the needs of their campers, parents and staff.
MIAB:Do you ever recommend that a child stay home for the summer?
TSL: An active, productive child is a happy child. Just staying at home will not benefit today’s child unless the parents are very creative with their time and are skilled at keeping them engaged. Children need to be with other children. They learn and mature living with other children and adults and being away from their parents. The benefits of camp last a lifetime. Camp is the best gift you can give your child.

Arrest warrants have been issued for the head of the Italian Bureau of Tourism (IBT) along with the capos of a little known arm of the Italian mafia, Tempo Nostro, for weather fixing. Suspicions arose when several tourists noticed an ubiquitous smiling sun in the weather forecast for Venice 365 days in a row.

A Class Action lawsuit has been started by a group of 20 litigious honeymooners. One bride spoke through her tears,” If we had known that there would be rain in Italy we would have never chosen it as our honeymoon destination. I feel betrayed and defiled”.

Attorneys for the Italian Bureau of Tourism claim they were not aware of the “glitch” in weather reporting. An unnamed Venetian metrological station employee offered a simple explanation, “The person who had been changing the weather icon from clouds to sun to rain died. Due to lack of funding, no one bothered to replace him”.

The IBT is being charged with “staging fair weather for financial gain”. The Tempo Nostro kingpins will be charged with Mafia association as well as threats to weathermen.

We were scratching our heads trying to figure out why we suddenly had so much interest in “Man Bites Dog” one of the family games we offer. Didn’t take much sleuthing to find out that it had been featured on “Live with Kelly and Michael”. Kelly’s youngest son Joaquin has dyslexia. One of his favorite games is “Man Bites Dog” .
