The Star Spangled Banner: 8 Innovative Interpretations

American flag over nycHow many people have sung “The Star Spangled Banner” since it  was was written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key? Millions, maybe billions. Ask any group of people to list memorable renditions of our national anthem and I bet a few of these will top most lists:

  • Raye Charles Probably my favorite male version.
  • Jose Feliciano When Jose first sang this before game 5 of 1968 World Series, it caused a huge uproar. Huge! Do read this article from the Society for American Baseball Research, “Jose Feliciano Lights Tigers Fire”.  It is hard to believe it was over 150 years before someone added a little flare to this well-loved, but well-worn classic.
