A mondegreen [mahn deh GREEN] is a word or phrase that results from a mishearing of something said or, most frequently, sung. “Very close veins” is a mondegreen for “varicose veins”. Get it?
Here are some hysterical hearing mishaps. Please send us yours!
What you heard: ‘Scuse me while I kiss this guy
The real lyrics: ‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky (Jimi Hendrx ‘Purple Haze’)
What you heard: Paper View TV
What was really said: Pay per View TV
What you heard: Olive the other reindeer
The real lyrics: All of the other reindeer ( ‘Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer’)
What you heard: Hope the city voted for you .
The real lyrics: Hopelessly devoted to you. (‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ Grease)
One of my favorites comes from the recent movie, “The Campaign” starring Will Ferrell and Zach Garafalnakis. When Will Ferrell’s character, Cam Brady is asked to recite the Lord’s Prayer he deftly recalls what he thought he heard in church.
What Cam Brady heard, then repeated: Our Father, Art, who up in heaven, Aloe Vera be thy name.
What he should have said: Our father who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name.
Pretty funny stuff. Send us some more!
