Portmanteaus or Portmanteaux: By Any Name We Love Them!

I know some educated wordsmiths sniff at the use of portmanteaus, but I think the creative marrying of 2 words or names is quite charming & very efficient. Why use 2 words when one will suffice? Does your hair stand on end when you hear ginormous (mine does-but this is the only exception!), Brangelina or chillax? Get over it! Most of us have been using portmanteaus for decades. Smog, motel, urinalysis, brunch….so there!

Guess which two words combined to make these mash up words:

  • McJobMc Donalds Worker
  • Falloween
  • Craptacular
  • Labradoodle
  • Trustafarian
  • Netiquette
  • Hazmat
  • Shopaholic
  • Bromance
  • Frankenstorm
  • Adultolescence (hope I spelled that correctly!)Labradoddl

How do you feel about portmanteaus? Know any good ones?

I created my own portmanteau: compelement. Elements that compel you to action. I wrote a blog about it to explain further. http://mattbaier.com/2012/02/compelements/
