Comedies for the College Bound: “Animal House” and Beyond

Starting college can be an anxiety-ridden time for both parents and students. After you College Campus Care Packages Wanted!make your lists and do your shopping, take some time to relax and watch a few good movies about college life. I recently asked my Facebook friends and Twitter followers which were their favorite funny movies about college. No surprise but National Lampoon’s “Animal House” was the number one movie. Here are the others that made the list:

Old School (2003) Will Ferrell and friends for a frat house for thirty-somethings.

PCU- (1994) That’s PC as in “politically correct” and this movie is anything but. Jeremy Piven headlines.

Real Genius- (1985)-Val Kilmer stars as a science whiz who wants to use his intellect for hi jinx.

The Marx BrothersRevenge of the Nerds– (1984) The title pretty much sums up the plot. Nerds use their brain power to overcome brawn.

Road Trip (2000) Group of college students take of on a road trip to intercept a raunchy video mistakenly sent to a high school sweetheart.

The Nutty Professor (1963 with Jerry Lewis) Jerry Lewis is a bumbling chemistry professor who concocts a potion to make him irresistible to a beautiful student.

The Nutty Professor (1996 with Eddie Murphy) Eddie Murphy gives several incredible performances in this remake of Jerry Lewis’s classic. Murphy not only plays himself but all the members, both male and female of his family.

Legally Blonde (2000) Reese Witherspoon shines as a bubbled-headed sorority girl determined to get in to Harvard Law School.

National Lampoon’s Van Wilder (2002)- Ryan Reynolds stars as a partying 7th year college student.

The Absent-Minded Professor (1961) Fred MacMurray stars in this Disney Classic as a chemistry professor who invents “Flubber”. Genuinely funny

Horse Feathers (1932)- This iconic college movie stars all four Marx Brothers. Despite prohibition references, it stills holds up.

Too Many Girls (1940)- Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz‘s first movie together. The person who recommended it said it was so bad it was good. I’m not sure if I’ll be renting this any time soon.

Back To School (1986) An endearing Rodney Dangerfield decides to go back to college-the same college where his son is going. All-star cast. This movie was mention almost as many times as “Animal House”
