Summer Camp 101: The Importance of Labeling

I was cleaning out our mudroom last week and found one of my favorite sweatshirts. Packing for Summer CampActually, it was a sweatshirt that appeared in one of my kids’ camp laundry bag. No one remembered who it belonged to, there was no label on it, and after an email was sent to the camp letting them know we had it, it became mine.

Lesson learned! Label everything you possibly can when your kids are heading off to camp. Here’s a few suggestions on how to keep track of your kids possessions:

  • Laundry markers-These are easy. Find a flat seam on the inside of most clothing and write.
  • Sew on name tags-Save these for really expensive items like coats & sweaters or athletic gear.
  • Colorful sewn decorations. Not my cup of tea but I have seen socks marker with a bright color of thread or yarn at the toe. Certainly stands out!
  • Luggage tags-I noticed one of my kid’s friends had small plastic luggage tags on all her shoes, boots and even one on her helmet.

Labels are not just for clothes! Cameras, ipods, sunglasses, water bottles, hats, goggles, toileties including toothbrush…if you pack it, label it.
