Wayland McQueen Coming to Del Close Marathon: Extreme Improv

Good grief! A genuine Midwesterner! Mirth in a Box is excited to get to know the  Wayland Mc Queentalented Wayland McQueen. You’ll be able to see him perform long form improv comedy several times during the 14th Annual Del Close Marathon in NYC.

WM:  Iowa originally. Now I live in Los Angeles

MiaB: What’s the name of your team?
WM: The Great War (I’m also doing a show called Mary. Todd. Lincoln)

MiaB: How long have you been with the UCB?
AB: I started taking classes in May 2007.

MiaB: What got you into improv?
AB:  I did a version of improv (that was nothing like improv) in high school for a thing called state speech. I brought that experience up to a professor my freshman year of college at the University of Northern Iowa. He pointed me to a second professor holding auditions for a brand new improv team (much more like normal improv). I auditioned, got on and really, really liked doing it.

MiaB: Who is your favorite improv performer/team to watch?
AB: Oh boy, this is a tough question. I really like watching all the Harold teams. It’s such a fun atmosphere on Harold Night. My first favorite team in LA was Convoy. As far as performers go, I’ve always really enjoyed watching Seth Morris.

MiaB: What has been your favorite moment doing improv?
AB: Another good question! Two moments spring to mind immediately, so I’ll use those. One is from a class show. I think it was a 201. I did my first scene that I was proud of. It just clicked, not to mention it was on the UCB stage. It was the first time I thought I might be able to do this long term.  I’m sure if I saw the scene now, I’d be embarrassed, but it was cool at the time. The other moment was my finale Harold Night show with my previous team, Swanzey. We had probably our best show. It ended with all of us on stage doing a scene together. It was a really nice way to go out.

MiaB: Have you ever performed at the Del Close Marathon before?
AB: I have. I performed in 2009 and 2010. It’s fun.

MiaB: What time is your slot?
AB: The Great War is at 11:45PM on Saturday at the Urban Stages. The other show is at 3:15AM on Saturday at UCB.

MiaB: Is there anything that you would like to say to the people out there in the internets?
AB: Not anything that I don’t immediately think is corny. I’ll self promote my twitter @waylandXTREME. I’m not anywhere close to extreme as the handle would suggest. Oh, and buy stuff from Mirth in a Box. The world needs all the joy it can get.

That’s right, Wayland! Thanks for the plug!
