New York get ready to laugh at/with Suzi Barrett! Suzi will be performing at this month’s Del Close Marathon in NYC. The Del Close Marathon is a weekend of long form comedy that features comedians from all over the world. Now, look closely at Suzi’s headshot…..yeah. You’ve seen her on TV. Now go see her in person!
MiaB: Where are you from originally?
SB: Originally the Detroit suburbs, but now Los Angeles.
MiaB: What’s the name of your team?
SB: Sentimental Lady. But I’m also doing marathon shows with Urban Legends, Rough Cut, Police—Pull Over!, and Alex Fernie’s Champagne Room.
MiaB: How long have you been with the UCB?
SB: Somewhere between 5 and 6 years.
MiaB: What got you into improv?
SB: To be honest, the original, British “Whose Line Is It Anyway” started airing on Comedy Central when I was in 8thgrade and that was my intro to improv. 13 year old me was obsessed with that show. A couple of years later, they opened Second City Detroit and I went to see their shows every chance I could get. After college, I moved straight to Chicago to study at Improv Olympic and Second City, trying to soak up a bit of improv learnin’.
MiaB: Who is your favorite improv performer/team to watch?
SB: I love Dassiriski, which is Bob Dasse, Rich Talarico, and Craig Cackowski. To me, they’re untouchable—both as improvisers and as kind human beings. Mostly because every time I try to touch them they say “Stop that immediately or I’ll call the police again”.
MiaB: What has been your favorite moment doing improv?
SB: It’s hard to say. Some of the bad moments actually stick out now as favorites. I was on a Boom Chicago tour show years ago, somewhere in the outskirts of Holland. I had to do the intro for the show, and 5 seconds into my intro (I think all I had gotten out was “How’s everybody doing tonight?”), some guy in the audience yelled “How ‘bout some LAUGHS PLEASE”. He sounded really droll and monotone when he said it; it’s hard to explain on paper, but my roommate and I laughed about that for years.
MiaB: Have you ever performed at the Del Close Marathon before?
SB: Yes. This will be my 3rd marathon.
MiaB: What time is your slot?
SB: Friday. 7:30 PM. UCB.
MiaB: Is there anything that you would like to say to the people out there in the internets?
SB: Get off the internet and go enjoy your life! Go outside! Do something! Have an experience! (So you can have something to talk about on the internet)
Thanks a heap, Suzi! Your a regular, very regular, doll!
