Lab notes: We thought Snapping Matches had all the elements for a good prank: Most smokers are looking furtively around for the tobacco police and not at their matches, the pack could be reused and the gag, though decades old, is not common. We smelt a winner.
The difficulty in testing laid with the fact that there are so few places to find smokers. Our testers found a lovely couple that invited us into there home during a party that had several smokers in attendance.
Alcohol was present.
Testing: We examined several different types of snapping matches. Once again, SS Adams’ “Snappy Matches” were the only ones to make the cut. Several of the other brands had inauthentic graphics on the outside covers that practically screamed, ” You will be pranked”. Prior to the party we conveniently placed ashtrays and matchbooks throughout the house and on the screened porch. Before long the first smoker was snapped, then a second and a third. Surprisingly, the joke worked several times on the same victim!
Conclusions: Our lab folks gave this joke high marks for realism, staying power, and subtleness. Both the pranker and the prankee enjoyed reveal.
